In a bid to strengthen its foothold in the country, leading domestic phone brand Micromax has formed a new subsidiary division called Yu.
Micromax brings in YU with CyanogenMod to counter Xiaomi’s
Mi
Yes, the name might resonate with the whole Mi philosophy from Xiaomi but the company strongly emphasizes its need to connect with the youth. However, the biggest takeaway about Yu, is the arrangement with CyanogenMod in place which is set to become an ever present figure, as part of the deal.

Reports regarding Micromax talking to CyanogenMod folks for major collaboration have been floating for a while and with the announcement of Yu, things have become a lot clearer. CyanogenMod has been known for bringing out custom ROMs of varied Android flavours and runs on devices like OnePlus One out-of-the-box.

Yu, as per the company statement, will be catering to services and end products like mobility devices, so and so forth. Both the companies have been discussing the prospect of setting up the Yu brand under the Project Yureka. The project is Micromax's new initiative that will broaden the brand's horizon, targeting youth consumers.

They have also talked up the announcement of first Yu devices, sometime in December this year and we'll be keeping our eyes open on this development. We're not sure as to how CyanogenMod will be functioning as a part of this project but surely, the signs are promising. Earlier this year, we came across reports that highlighted the prospect of a Micromax Canvas phone getting the CynogenMod goodies, turn out they had different plans for CM altogether. Yu has been formed by Rahul Sharma, co-founder of Micromax and will be targeting the online sales channel only.

So, get set for the first Indian mobile brand taking CyanogenMod on board.
