PLOT SUMMARY

The story of Hawaizaada begins in the 1890s India under the British Rule. After repeating the same class eight times, Shivi (Ayushmann Khurrana) is expelled from school. He's enjoying his newly attained freedom when he bumps into the sensuality personified Sitara (Pallavi Sharda), the local diva, and Cupid strikes.

Meanwhile, fed up of his rebellious and carefree ways, Shivi's father shows him the door. The reality of his ouster also hits Sitara hard. Afraid of the thought that she'll be accused of bringing shame and disgrace to Shivi, she decides to leave the city. Distraught and dejected, Shivi slips into a life of sin and debauchery, till Shastry enters his life. An eccentric yet genius scientist and Vedic scholar, Shastry inspires Shivi to take control of himself and shares with him his dream of doing the impossible -- of making the world's first aircraft, an interpretation of freedom.

Will Shivi ever be able to live up to his guru's dream forms the crux of this story about a failed lover, a diva, an old man's dream and an impossible machine.

Spoiler ahead: Do not read this until you have seen the film

Shastry dies mid-way and his unfinished dream of making the airplane stays. The British try their best to thwart Shivi plans too. However, Shivi who is truly repentant that he was in a way responsible for killing Shastry by stealing a book that had his `secret recipe' to make an object fly; completes his mentor's dream. He makes the airplane and takes his true love Sitara on the first ride. So in a sense it is an Indian who actually flew the first ever plane. Yes though history has it that in 1903, the Wright Brothers flew a plane in North Carolina, eight years prior to this, in the pre-Independence period, an Indian had actually made history.
